A lot of you have seen the tall and talented basketball players on television, or even in real life, dribbling, passing, and shooting the ball into the ring so effortlessly. Maybe at some point, you wondered how to be like those players. But never worry, the GCC Basketball Varsity got you!

The GCC Basketball Varsity is where students hone their athletic talents. The varsity is divided into two teams—students with ages 18 years old and below, and students with ages 15 years old and below. Practices are held atWinterpine Gym, located in E. Rodriguez, and also at the school gym four times a week. The question remains, do you have what it takes to join the league?

This question is exactly what Justin Ngo asked himself as he went to Coach RJ Guevarra, the head coach of GCC, to sign up for the summer tryouts. Little did he know, he was more than ready for the challenge. “The reason why I joined [the basketball varsity], is because I wanted to try new things, especially as a new student during Grade 8. Not only do you improve your basketball skills, but you also get to meet new friends from other schools,” says the now Co-Captain of the older age division of the GCC Basketball Varsity, Justin Ngo. Co-Captain Justin Ngo also emphasized the importance of getting more conditioned, and having more chemistry amongst teammates, in order to have a better chance in Inter-School competitions such as the PCYAA.

One might wonder how Justin manages to juggle the responsibilities of being Co-Captain of the basketball varsity team, and as a student. Having practice four times a week, Justin expresses how hard it is to be part of the basketball varsity team, especially when the practice starts around 6:00 p.m., ends at 8:00 p.m. and he will get home by 10:00 p.m. However for Justin, commitment is key. “If you are committed, you will find a way. I tend to do my homework before the 6:00 p.m. practice, or early in the morning, so I can rest by the time I get home.” He continued by saying that the pros outweigh the cons. “Some of the benefits of playing basketball are improvement of your skills, and enhanced confidence in basketball, but also in life as a whole. Aside from being recognized and gaining popularity in school, more importantly one can bring glory to the Lord.”

“You’ll never know until you try.” Even though you are scared to try new things out, you might never know what will happen until you try. It’s fun to have a sport as we strive to give glory to the One who deserves it all!
